NHL fines Jets defenceman for late hit

WINNIPEG — The National Hockey League has disciplined Winnipeg Jets defenceman Mark Stuart for a late hit on Friday night.

Stuart smacked Washington forward Marcus Johansson into the boards at 8:41 of the first period in Friday’s 3-2 win over the Caps. The NHL said the hit was too late, classified it as interference and has fined Stuart $2,500, the maximum allowed in the current CBA.

Johansson’s helmet came off with the contact, which also appeared to be on the high side. The league made no mention of a head check in its ruling.
