Third-period collapse dooms Jets

Steven Stamkos’s one-timer in overtime officially ended the playoff hopes of the Winnipeg Jets in Tampa tonight.

Stamkos beat Ondrej Pavelec for his league-leading 56th goal of the season 45 seconds into the extra period to give the Lightning a 3-2 win.

The Jets failed once again to win in the second half of a back-to-back situation after winning in overtime on Friday night in Carolina. They fell to 36-34-9, and were officially eliminated from playoff contention because of the loss and the Washington Capitals’ shootout win over Montreal.

Ryan Malone’s second goal of the night drew the Lightning even in the third period. The Lightning bombarded Pavelec in the third period, outshooting the Jets 21-7.

Malone banged in a rebound on the power play to make it 2-2. The Jets took three minor penalties in a 3 1/2 minute span, and eventually paid the price.

Goals in the second period by Antti Miettinen and Kyle Wellwood gave the Jets a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Miettinen drew the Jets even with the Lightning when he converted an Evander Kane pass from behind the net 6:20 into the second period.

A big Dustin Byfuglien shot led to a rebound right on the stick of Wellwood, who put it over goalie Sebasiten Caron to make it 2-1 midway through the period.

Malone chipped the puck into the Winnipeg zone, skated around defenceman Grant Clitsome and deked out goalie Ondrej Pavelec to his forehand at 15:37 of the first period.

Tanner Glass broke his foot in Friday night’s win in Carolina and is out for the season. Chris Thorburn returned to the Jets lineup after missing time with a lower-body injury.

The Jets wrap up their road schedule when they visit the Florida Panthers on Tuesday and the New York Islanders on Thursday. The season finale goes a week from tonight at MTS Centre, when the Lightning visit Winnipeg.

TAMPA – The Winnipeg Jets have re-assigned Ben Maxwell to the St. John’s IceCaps in order to make room for Chris Thorburn in the lineup.

Thorburn will skate for the Jets in tonight’s match against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Maxwell was a healthy scratch in Friday’s win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Winger Tanner Glass broke his foot in Friday’s game and is done for the season but Thorburn will draw in for Glass.

Rookie Spencer Machacek, who has two goals and six assists in his current eight-game stint with the Jets, will stay in the lineup for Winnipeg.

The Sabres face the Toronto Maple Leafs while the Caps are in Montreal for a game against the Canadiens.
