Barring a major setback, expect quarterback Buck Pierce to be under centre when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers take on the Montreal Alouettes later this week.

The Bombers pivot was forced to leave the 33-16 loss to the B.C. Lions last Friday when he suffered a right knee injury, and was seen at the Vancouver airport limping around with a cane. The injury wasn’t serious, Pierce said over the weekend, and now that a couple days have passed, the Winnipeg starting quarterback should be fine for when the Bombers travel to Quebec for a Friday date versus the Alouettes.

“Unless something crazy happens, I’m expecting to go,” he told reporters after practice at Canad Inns Stadium Monday.

Pierce said the right knee, which was heavily bandaged during the two-hour practice, was feeling sore but was “doing a lot better than it was the other day.”

“It’s one of those things that they (the trainers) expect it to get better every day,” he said. “They gave me the option to see what I wanted to do (Monday); it’s felt good enough to go out there and do the whole practice.”

Head coach Paul LaPolice was encouraged with what he saw from his veteran QB Monday.

“He had a good day,” LaPolice said. “He said he was sore after the game, but he said, ‘I’ll get through practice fine, coach,’ and he did. He had good mobility, so it was good.”

As for the rest of the Bombers’ walking wounded, the injury report featured a mixed bag. Receiver Cory Watson (hamstring); linebacker Marcellus Bowman; right tackle Andre Douglas; and running back Chad Simpson are not expected to be ready for the Montreal game.

Left tackle Glenn January did participate in some of the practice Monday, but LaPolice didn’t want to rule him in or out for the Alouettes.

Rookie Rene Stephan looks to be lost for the season after injuring his knee against the Leos. The Canadian special teamer was hit in the back in coverage during the third quarter – a play the Bombers weren’t too thrilled with.

“We think it’s the year,” the coach said. “He did very well on special teams, too. He had two tackles early. I didn’t like … I won’t say, but he got hit in the back. I didn’t think that was really good. But he did a nice job. He’s a good young Canadian. He’s going to be good for us.”

LaPolice has sent in a tape to the CFL regarding the play, but stressed that the clip was merely one of several he was asking the league to clarify.

The Bombers also signed two players to the practice roster Monday, adding import running back Will Ford and import defensive lineman Youri Yenga.
