The annual slugfest that is the Labour Day Classic is about to introduce another juicy subplot.

Saskatchewan Roughriders special-teams coach Craig Dickenson announced his resignation from the club today and, within an hour, was linked to the same gig with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Bombers won’t confirm Dickenson’s hiring, offering ‘no comment as of right now’, but a Canadian Football League source said the deal is still being finalized and it will get done.

Dickenson would replace Kyle Walters with the Bombers, as Walters has been bumped up to the assistant GM job.

Said Dickenson in a written statement to the Roughriders today:

“My decision to resign is based on off-season commitments I have made that I intend to honour and also to a conflict of schedule which could not be worked out. I appreciate the effort and work of the players and coaches I had the privilege of working with during my two years in Regina. I want to thank Coach Chamblin for hiring me and supporting me this past season. I especially want to thank and express my sincere appreciation to Jim Hopson, Brendan Taman, and Jeremy O’Day. Thank you Rider Nation for your support and enthusiasm these past two years.”

Taman, the Rider GM, told reporters in Regina he thought Dickenson’s decision came because he couldn’t commit to being in Saskatchewan as much as the team had asked during the off-season.

Considered one of the best special-teams coaches in the CFL, Dickenson rejoins Bomber head coach Tim Burke and defensive co-ordinator Casey Creehan. The three had previously worked together in Calgary.
