The Winnipeg Free Press has been honoured with three National Newspaper Awards nominations.

The announcement came today from the NNA office in Toronto. There were 72 finalists in 22 categories.

Mary Agnes Welch, who is currently on leave on a William Southam Journalism Fellowship, is nominated for the third time under the category of Beat Reporting for her public policy coverage. Her stories looked at banks abandoning the inner city, pesticide use, bad roads, the Ebb and Flow First Nation and the tale of Manitoba’s sturgeon (links at left).

Lindor Reynolds is nominated under the Short Features category for her story on a Scanterbury resident who built a large red chair in honour of the community’s ditch wavers.

Phil Hossack and Melissa Tait are nominated under the Multimedia Feature category for their portrait of an international humanitarian and aid mission. Hossack travelled to Nicaragua with a team of doctors, nurses and physiotherapists from Concordia Hospital to chronicle them performing 49 knee replacements, while Tait edited the video of the trip. In the category Feature Photography, Tim Smith of the Brandon Sun was nominated for a photo of a child coping with rare illness that makes it hard for her to clear her throat on her own.

The NNAs, which were founded by the Toronto Press Club in 1949, will be handed out at a ceremony inside Ottawa’s Canadian War Museum on May 3.

In October 2012 a medical team of surgeons, nurses, physiotherapists and support stuff traveled from Winnipeg to Managua, Nicaragua to perform knee replacements for those who normally could not afford surgeries. Operation Walk sends teams around the world on orthopedic aid missions, the Winnipeg teams from Concordia and Seven Oaks raised $180,000. Free Press photojournalist Phil Hossack documented the trip.
