The Toronto Argonauts will be the opponent of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Investors Group Field Friday night, but it will be the Winnipeg Jets who the Bombers will be going up against on Nov. 2.
The release of the Jets 2013-14 schedule Friday afternoon came with a surprise for the Bombers — the Jets will be hosting the defending Stanley Cup Champions Chicago Blackhawks at MTS Centre that afternoon at the same time as the Bombers are playing their final regular-season home game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Investors Group Field.
Kickoff time for the Bombers that afternoon — in a game against a division rival that could have critical playoff implications — is 1 p.m., while the Jets will drop the puck across town at 2 p.m..
The direct conflict will, of course, make it impossible for fans of both teams — they are the most common type — to take in both games that day.
Jets spokesman Scott Brown said in an email Friday afternoon that the team is aware of the conflict with the Bombers, but the Nov. 2 contest is a Saturday game on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and the timing is “out of our hands.”
Bombers spokesman Darren Cameron said the football team only saw the Jets schedule this afternoon like everyone else and could not immediately comment.
“We’ll look at that situation in the coming weeks, but are obviously focused on tonight right now,” Cameron wrote in a text, referencing the Bombers Week 4 CFL contest against the Argos tonight.
Kickoff tonight is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Investors Group Field between the 1-2 Bombers and 1-2 Argos. The Bombers reported earlier Friday that they had sold 31,000 tickets for tonight’s game. Capacity at Investors Group Field is 33,500.
The game-time scratches for the Bombers tonight are offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk, slotback Terrence Edwards, returner Aaron Woods and running back Carl Volny.
The game is being broadcast live on TSN and CJOB.
