SO just how good was Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray Friday night? Record-breaking good, it turns out.

Ray’s 95 per cent completion percentage against the Bombers — he went 19-20 for 286 yards and two TDs before leaving in the third quarter with a knee injury — set a new CFL record, according to a release sent out by the Argos on Saturday.

Ray also owned the old record for passing percentage in a single game — he was 92 per cent (23-25) against the Montreal Alouettes on Oct. 31, 2008, according to the Argos.

Ray was hurt on a play involving Bombers defensive tackle Zach Anderson, who took to his Twitter account on Saturday to set the record straight about the play.

“Regarding my hit on Ricky Ray last night, It was completely unintentional and hope he can return to the field soon!,” wrote Anderson.

Both Anderson and defensive back Alex Suber, who was responsible for a different hit that knocked Argos running back Chad Kackert out of the game, were criticized for what some felt were questionable hits.

Burke was hearing none of it.

“Oh, come on, give me a break,” said Burke. “You know what? It’s football, people get hurt. That’s how it is.”

Burke pointed out the diminutive Suber was only being smart in hitting Kackert low. “When you’re 150 pounds, you don’t take a running back on up high.”

Bombers punter Mike Renaud struggled for a second straight game Friday night, and he knew it.

“I’ve got to do better,” said Renaud. “I don’t know what it is. I’m just taking my eye off the ball. And thinking too much, I think. Thinking too much — period.”

Renaud beat back challenges from three other punters in training camp to win the job this season and he was so solid through the first two regular-season games — second in the league in punting average — that the club dropped punter Billy Pavlopoulos from the practice roster after Week 2.

But since then, it’s been a mess of shanks for Renaud. He averaged just 39.9 yards per punt in a loss to Hamilton in Guelph last weekend. And he was only marginally better against Toronto.

Although Renaud had some big punts — including a 55-yarder –and finished the night with a modest 42.3 yard average, he also had shanks of 29, 30 and 35 yards that brought back memories of his inconsistency last season.

“I’ll have to watch film, break it down and correct it,” said Renaud. “I really do think I’m taking my eye off the ball. I’m not seeing the ball very well right now and when that happens, you mishit it.”
