Jets’ opening night roster: a forecast

NHL clubs must name a roster of 23 players (not including injuries) prior to the opening of the season. Here's a look at what we think the Jets will look like on opening night. We have 24 players listed as the Jets can place someone on injured reserve to buy a little decision time.

(if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it)

Evander Kane Mark Scheifele Devin Setoguchi

(Kane and Setoguchi will help Scheifele more than he will them in the early going)

Matt Halischuk Ollie Jokinen Michael Frolik

(Less pressure on Jokinen to produce and Frolik might have the game to get him going)

Eric Tangradi Jim Slater James Wright

(Slater is the only sure thing on this line. Lots of options for the Jets here but Tangradi has had a good camp and the coaches like Wright and his versatility)

Defence

Dustin Byfuglien, Toby Enstrom

(automatic)

Zach Bogosian, Grant Clitsome

(Time for Bogosian to take another step. Clitsome has lulls but when he’s right he’s effective)

Mark Stuart, Jacob Trouba

(Stuart brings leadership and edge. Trouba is still a question mark but likely gets an opening-night look)

Goal

Ondrej Pavelec, Al Montoya

(Expectations on Pavelec have been raised and he’ll be asked to live up them — often)

Press box

Anthony Peluso, Ian White, Paul Postma, Chris Thorburn

(Peluso wants to be an every-night player. White is still looking for a contract and if Trouba isn’t ready for prime time this could come down to a choice between him and Postma. Thorburn is in a fight for his NHL status.)
