Some disgruntled councillors are turning their sights on Mayor Sam Katz and his senior cabinet in the wake of the fire station land-swap scandal.
Councillors Harvey Smith and Ross Eadie said Katz should follow ex-CAO Phil Sheegl and resign.
Katz “shouldn’t have to be asked to resign, he should just go,” Smith (Daniel McIntyre) told councillors over the lunch hour. “He brought (Sheegl) here — this mess is his fault.”
Katz said he would not respond to calls for his resignation.
Smith said only a small group of councillors – himself, Russ Wyatt, Ross Eadie, Jenny Gerbasi and John Orlikow — voted against hiring Sheegl as CAO, adding all other councillors should resign over the mess Sheegl created at city hall.
Police union calls for RCMP investigation
Meanwhile, the union representing Winnipeg police officers has called for an RCMP investigation into Winnipeg’s fire-paramedic station replacement program.
Winnipeg Police Association president Mike Sutherland said Thursday the Mounties should investigate whether anything illegal transpired during the procurement and construction of four fire-paramedic stations in Winnipeg.
A scathing audit released Monday found the project was mismanaged, over budget and resulted in unfair contract awards.
City council voted Wednesday to ask external legal counsel to see whether anything illegal transpired.
Sutherland said police could do the job at no cost to the city. He said the RCMP must do this, as the Winnipeg Police Service is a department within the City of Winnipeg.
