Environmentalist, Free Press photo editor named to Order of the Buffalo Hunt

Premier Greg Selinger today awarded one of Manitoba’s highest honours, the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, to Jon Thordarson and James Potton, both of Winnipeg, recognizing their commitment and excellence to the fields of photojournalism and graphic design, and environmental education.

“Jon Thordarson spent a lifetime chronicling the photographic history of Manitoba through his careers with the Winnipeg Tribune, the Winnipeg Sun and, for the past 20 years of his life, with the Winnipeg Free Press,” said Selinger. “Sadly, Jon passed away just days before he was to receive this honour in 2010.”

Selinger thanked Jim Potton for efforts in the field of environmental education for the past quarter century, which have been instrumental in helping young people learn about protecting the environment through the Manitoba Forestry Association and Envirothon, often described as the environmental academic Olympics for high schools.

The Order of the Buffalo Hunt was created in 1957 and has been used to recognize individuals or organizations who have demonstrated outstanding skills in the areas of leadership, service and community commitment.
