Despite frigid temperatures, New Year’s at The Forks is on

Despite an extreme wind chill warning for Winnipeg, the show will go on at The Forks tonight.

There’ll be plenty of live entertainment for all ages this evening as we say farewell to 2013 and welcome the new year, including live music, fireworks, and a dance party. 

Just one event, the horse-drawn wagon rides, has been cancelled.

Tonight’s temperature is expected to drop to -34 C, and the wind chill will be a skin-freezing -48.

So, the message is to bundle up.

For kids, Manitoba Public Insurance is sponsoring Kids Crafts from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the south aisle of the Forks Market, where children can create and decorate their own New Year’s hat. 

Bands playing on the main stage at the Forks Market include Red Moon Road, The Bros Landreth, Retro Rhythm Review, and Jason Kirkness. Music starts at 5:45 p.m.

Afterwards, the Party in The Port dance party kicks off at 9:45 p.m., with music from DJ Hunnicutt & DJ Coop. Fireworks will be provided by three-time world champions, Archangel Fireworks, at 10 p.m. 

Arctic Glacier Winter Park will be open all day today. Activities include 1.2-kilometres of skating trails, a toboggan hill, and skate rentals, located in the tower atrium in the Forks Market. Skate rentals are $3 for children and seniors, and $5 for adults.
