What’s open, what’s closed on New Year’s Day

January 1 is a federal statutory and provincial general holiday.

The Winnipeg Free Press will not publish a print edition on Wednesday.

Here’s a quick guide to other openings and closings around the city.

Shopping

All major malls in Winnipeg are closed Jan. 1.  Some shops at The Forks will be open 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

On New Year’s Eve , Liquor Mart locations will be open 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., with the exception of Airport Liquor Mart Express, Pembina Village Express and Brandon West End Express which will be open until 6 p.m.

On New Year’s Day, all Liquor Mart locations will be closed.

Winnipeg Transit

Manitoba Public Insurance is once again sponsoring free transit service on New Year’s Eve. Free rides start at 8 p.m. and run until about 1:45 a.m. The offer applies to all regular and Handi-Transit service.

Buses will be operating on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day.

Governments

All city, provincial, and federal offices will be closed on Jan.1 and will reopen on Thursday, Jan. 2. The city’s 311 phone line and email address will be in service.

All cemeteries, libraries, leisure centres, pools, and Animal Services will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Garbage and recycling pickup

Service will continue as usual on Dec. 31. There will be no recycling or garbage collection on Jan. 1; collection will be one day later for residents whose usual pickup date is Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.  Normal collection resumes next week.

The Brady Road Landfill will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Out and about

The traditional New Year’s Day Levee will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Manitoba Legislative Building, offering tours inside the legislative building and complimentary sleigh rides around the Legislative grounds. The event is hosted by Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee, his wife Anita and Premier Greg Selinger. Food donations for Winnpeg Harvest will also be collected.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery will be open 24 hours between 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 6 p.m. on Jan. 1 to give Winnipeggers one final chance to see the late-night hours of Christian Marclay’s The Clock.  The exhibit uses thousands of film excerpts to form a 24-hour real-time montage. Shorter showings run until Jan. 5.

The Assiniboine Zoo closed at noon on Dec. 31, but is open regular hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) on Jan. 1.

The Manitoba Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 1.
