The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed veteran NFL running back Kevin Smith to the roster.

Smith — a third-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in 2008 — started 31 games for the Lions over 5 seasons, rushing for 2,346 yards and 17 TDs. Smith also recorded 123 receptions for 1,082 yards and five touchdowns.

Smith’s final season with Detroit was in 2012. He started two games that season, carrying 37 times for 134 yards.

Smith will be expected to challenge veteran Bombers RB Will Ford for a job at training camp next month.

Prior to joining the Lions, Smith was the all-time rushing leader for the University of Central Florida Knights, where he carried 905 times for 4,864 yards and 45 touchdowns.
