WINNIPEG — The first serious injury of training camp has hit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hard.

Defensive tackle Ryan Lucas, about to start his sixth CFL season, has been lost for the year because of an injury to his knee’s anterior cruciate ligament on the first day of the team’s CFL training camp at Investors Group Field.

The injury to the Vancouver native rattled head coach Mike O’Shea when he was asked about it after practice today.

“He was down on the turf, I turned around, and he said he heard something go in his knee,” O’Shea told reporters. “It’s been confirmed.”

O’Shea was emotional when he answered a question about what the injury might do to the Bombers’ ratio of Canadian players.

“It becomes a personal issue when I lose a guy with an ACL on the first day of camp, a guy who loves football so much that he can’t stand it. It’s not about the ratio, it’s about a guy who’s … nothing about ratio.”
