The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without starting defensive lineman Zach Anderson for the remainder of the 2014 CFL season.

The club announced today that Anderson tore his ACL during a practice drill on Wednesday at Investors Group Field and will not return this season.

“You feel terrible for the guy,” head coach Mike O’Shea told reporters Thursday. “Zach’s an important guy to have around. And football’s a big part of his life. To have it taken away for a little while, it’s tough on him.”

It was the worst possible news for a Bombers team that had already this week lost the services of another defensive lineman, Jason Vega, to a knee injury.

Vega’s injury is considered less serious — he is expected to return this season — but the loss of half their defensive line has the Bombers scrambling for solutions this week as they prepare to face the BC Lions in Vancouver on Saturday in a West Division battle with important playoff implications.

The Bombers will activate imports Willie Moseley and Marvin Booker — who were signed just last week — from the practice roster to replace Vega and Anderson, O’Shea said Thursday.

Booker appeared to take more of the first team reps than Moseley on Thursday.

The Bombers starting offence appears as it will be the same as the one Winnipeg used against Saskatchewan in last Sunday’s Banjo Bowl. The starting offensive unit practiced intact on Thursday as the Bombers went through their final full practice at Investors Group Field before travelling to Vancouver on Friday.

Meanwhile, Bombers centre Steve Morley was fined by the CFL on Thursday for punching a Riders player near the end of last Sunday’s game. Riders DB Paul Woldu was also fined Thursday for “making avoidable physical contact with an on-field official” during the August 31 game against the Bombers, the CFL said.

And finally, Edmonton Eskimos DB Patrick Watkins was fined for making what were described in media reports earlier this week as homophobic comments towards Calgary Stampeders QB Bo Levi Mitchell during a game last Saturday.
