The Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback depth chart will be juggled again this week for Saturday’s matchup against the B.C. Lions.

The Bombers will turn the controls of the offence back to Drew Willy – who had started 15 of the first 16 games before a hand injury kept him from last Saturday’s loss to the Calgary Stampeders.

Head coach Mike O’Shea said that Willy threw Monday and also confirmed what was feared Saturday night: Brian Brohm, who started the Calgary loss, suffered a broken thumb when banging his throwing hand off Stampeder defender Juwan Simpson’s helmet. The injury required surgery, effectively ending Brohm’s season.

That means Willy will start and be backed up by Robert Marve and Josh Portis.

“Drew looks good. He threw today,” said O’Shea. “It’s getting better and better.”

O’Shea said SB Nick Moore and DB Demond Washington were scheduled to see the doctor on Monday after suffering injuries in Saturday’s loss, the Bombers seventh straight.

Guard Patrick Neufeld should return to practice, but the status of right tackle Glenn January is still uncertain although there is a hope he will be back on the field.

The Bombers are 6-10 and not yet officially eliminated from the playoff picture. O’Shea wasn’t sugar-coating the club’s loss against Calgary, but admitted he did see a better response from his squad compared to the team that was out-scored 83-29 in the two previous weeks in losses to Ottawa and Edmonton.

“I think we saw some progress in this last game and it just bumped us off that level where we were getting a little stagnant,” he said. “I wouldn’t say we progressed enough to beat Calgary, although there were some opportunities there on film. Just like Coach Hufnagel probably says it should have been a more-lopsided score out there.

“I think we progressed this week over the previous two but it’s still not good enough, obviously, to get the win.”
