After a breakout debut with the Blue Bombers last season, safety Maurice Leggett is signing on to wear blue and gold for another three campaigns.

Today the Bombers announced they have signed the club’s most outstanding defensive player to a contract extension which will keep him in Winnipeg through 2017.

Leggett was a beast in the back for the Bombers last season, finishing tied for second in the CFL with five picks – three of which happened in just one game on Aug. 22. He also snatched up three fumble recoveries, and recorded 65 defensive tackles and two sacks. In October against Ottawa, Leggett also brought back a missed field goal 114 yards for a TD.

In a conference phone call with media this morning, Leggett said he believed the Bombers could be a contender in 2015, now that a shaky first season under the new Bombers regime is behind them. “It’s just the trust factor,” Leggett said, from his home in Atlanta. “You had a bunch of new guys, a lot of rookies on the team, new staff. The realization of the business is not everyone’s going to trust everyone, especially the first year. It’s just the camaraderie… you have to know when you’re able to lead, and when you’re supposed to follow.”

In a statement, Bombers GM Kyle Walters praised Leggett’s professionalism. “It was evident quickly that he could be an impact player for us, and his play spoke to that throughout the season,” Walters said in the Bombers release. “He works hard, studies and understands the game like a starting safety should.”
