Evander Kane’s agent says the Winnipeg Jets’ left-winger and Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff have spoken regarding Kane’s interest in playing elsewhere.

Asked whether this episode, or any prior episode has led Kane and his camp to Cheveldayoff for a trade, agent Craig Oster didn’t deny it.

“It’s something that Kevin and Evander have addressed multiple times in the past several years, and I’ll leave it at that,” Oster said. “I think in response, Evander is a Jet and will continue to be a Jet until his contract is not renewed or he’s traded.”

The Newport sports player representative said in a second conversation later tonight that what he meant by “addressed multiple times” was that both Kane and Cheveldayoff have addressed separately and in public the question of asking for a trade.

They have indeed addressed it, and nobody’s ever denied it. In fact, Jets sources tonight said the idea that a conversation between the men about a trade is not untrue.

In his conversation with the Free Press earlier today, Oster said that he doesn’t expect Kane will be talking to media or fans in the near future, given that surgery to repair his dislocated left shoulder is scheduled for Saturday with the Winnipeg Jets’ club surgeon Dr. Peter MacDonald.

Recovery time following a serious procedure will be involved, and despite the reports of a rift or dispute between Kane and one or more of his teammates, Oster doesn’t think much more needs saying.

“I think it’ll be in the past,” Oster said.

Oster was adamant with several reporters today, including the Free Press, that the events of Tuesday in Vancouver when Kane was made a healthy scratch by Jets coach Paul Maurice, do not amount to a crisis or a rift within the team.

“I’m not aware of anything,” Oster said. “A lot of that is speculation. I don’t think speculation is healthy or productive and I don’t have any evidence of that.”

Oster explained that Kane’s medical issues should not be confused with anything else that happened this week.

“Pete (MacDonald) has been involved on all the occasions with this discussion and assessment of Evander’s health,” Oster said. “He did some imaging last summer and at the time they decided they’d try to rehab through the summer and come back and play through it. It got progressively worse, to the point of it (Kane’s shoulder) coming out of the joint in the game in Philadelphia (Jan. 29). He said it came out twice in that game but he finished it and played again in Calgary and there he talked to the staff about getting another examination. It led to the decision that the surgery is required.”
