The Hockey Talks night coincides with today’s official launch of The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation’s Project 11 to address mental-health issues in children as young as 10 years old. All seven Canadian NHL teams are hosting a Hockey Talks game.

Project 11, first conceived in 2013, is being offered in 86 classrooms throughout the province this year – 43 this month and 43 more in September.

Project 11 is named after former Manitoba Moose forward Rick Rypien, who suffered from depression before his suicide 3 1/2 years ago. It targets students in grades five through eight using video tutorials to teach them about positive mental health.

Heidi Fingas, author and coordinator for Project 11, said the free program gives teachers 15 lesson plans and 60 daily “body check” activities that are geared towards increasing a child’s self-awareness and relationship-building.

“This honestly will help support teachers in a lot of struggles they may not know how to deal with,” Fingas said.

She added Project 11 is a 15-week classroom program, with three videos a week, which the teacher determines when to use. It also involves all students discussing the video afterwards.

“The feedback is that some teachers are seeing more involvement from kids that are shy sometimes and they are kind of breaking that shell open,” Fingas said.

The model of Project II is based on the Vancouver Canucks Fin’s Friends program
