One male is dead and another is in police custody after a high-speed police chase ended in a crash in Headingley late Wednesday night.
The collision occurred in a ditch on Wescana Street, about 500 metres from Roblin Boulevard in the RM of Headingley just west of Winnipeg. Resident Ashley Hamilton said she was awoken just before midnight by “the lights” of the emergency vehicles in the area.
“The accident came to an end about 100 yards from my back door,” she said. “There were so many lights from emergency vehicles that my house was lit up like a disco ball. I’ve been in Headingley for over 10 years and I’ve never seen a police presence like that in my life, let alone Headingley.”
Hamilton said she went out onto her deck to ask a nearby police officer what was happening.
“They immediately yelled at me to get back into my house,” she said.
“I guess the second guy hadn’t been found yet. I was scared as hell.”
Debris and blood stains in the snow were still visible at the crash site this morning.
Police first tracked the vehicle, which was believed to be stolen, at around 11 p.m., in the 700 block of Cavalier Drive after a report of a commercial break-and-enter in the area.
The vehicle was later located by police in the area of Portage Avenue and Moray Street. The driver refused to stop and fled south on Moray, at which time officers pursued and contacted the police helicopter to assist. The pursuit was aborted in the area of William Clement Parkway and Grant Avenue but AIR1 continued to track the vehicle until it eventually crashed on Wescana.
The driver was transported to hospital in critical condition. He later died of his injuries.
Hamilton said police quickly found the second occupant lying on her next-door neighbour’s porch.
“It was probably panic, fear, injured and cold,” she said. “It is set in, so I guess he thought it was a good place to hide. I don’t know if my neighbours even knew anyone was there.”
Manitoba RCMP has taken over the investigation of the fatal collision.
