The Manitoba Moose will join the Central Division of the Western Conference for the 2015-16 AHL season, the league’s board of governors decided today.
At meetings in Chicago, the league re-aligned in several ways.
For starters, it’s going back to two divisions instead of three within the two conferences.
The Moose will join the Charlotte Checkers, Chicago Wolves, Grand Rapids Griffins, Iowa Wild, Lake Erie Monsters, Milwaukee Admirals and Rockford IceHogs in the Central Division.
The Moose are the relocated St. John’s IceCaps, which spent four seasons in the Newfoundland and Labrador capital as members of the Eastern Conference.
St. John’s is welcoming a new affiliate, the Montreal Canadiens, and maintaining its membership in the Eastern Conference.
The AHL also formed a new Pacific Division for next season.
It will include the Bakersfield Condors (Edmonton), Ontario Reign (L.A.), San Antonio Rampage (Colorado), San Diego Gulls (Anaheim), San Jose Barracuda (San Jose), Stockton Heat (Calgary) and Texas Stars (Dallas).
Edmonton, L.A., Anaheim, San Jose and Calgary pushed the AHL to form the new west-coast division by relocating their affiliates from Eastern Time Zone locations. The AHL has added San Antonio and Texas to that grouping.
The league gave no word today on schedule format or playoff format.
Those items will be decided at the July meetings, though the Moose are planning to play a 76-game schedule, which has been normal in the AHL for several years.
