Community members are rallying around local jockey Alyssa Selman after a devastating racing accident left her paralyzed from the chest down.

On June 27, while racing at Assiniboia Downs, Selman’s horse clipped heels with another, causing injuries that left Selman with a five per cent chance of walking again.

In addition to donations flowing in from the international horse racing community, the Downs set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to help the 29-year-old mother of two. Selman’s home in St. Lupicin isn’t wheelchair friendly, and the family is considering purchasing a wheelchair accessible home. In less than three weeks, contributors have raise more than $13,000 of the $20,000 goal.

In a news release on Thursday, friends said Selman “remains hopeful in the face of the bad news.” According to the statement, Selman’s mood is “up and down” as she adjusts to the gravity of her situation, and she is expected to be in the hospital for at least another three to six months.

“The people in Winnipeg are very giving,” said Lianne Tregobov, who helped organize a benefit for Selman this week. “They see something like this and you find out how caring they are. All you have to do is ask.”
