The Goldeyes’ trip out east hasn’t quite been the home run the team was desperate for, but at least they can boast that slugger Reggie Abercrombie made some big hits of his own.
On Monday the American Association named Abercrombie as its most recent player of the week. While the Goldeyes went 4-3 through the first seven games of their current road trip against Can-Am League teams in Ontario and Quebec, the gregarious outfielder was hitting pure fire. He notched a base hit in all but one of those seven tilts, collected multiples in five, and batted .484 with two home runs, eight RBI and five runs of his own.
This marks the first time a Goldeye has been named player of the week this season, though ace Nick Hernandez has thrice earned the pitcher of the week honour in 2015.
That’s a bit of good news for the Goldeyes, who are otherwise finding that the window to make a push for a wild card playoff spot is all but closed. The Goldeyes are now 40-46 on the season, six games back of the Laredo Lemurs for that postseason berth. They wrap up their Can-Am League trip starting at 6 p.m. tonight, with the first of three games against the Quebec Capitales. That match will be shown live on canamleague.tv, as well as Winnipeg radio station Jewel 100.5 FM.
After that, they head back home to Shaw Park, where they’ll close out the season with an 11-game homestand.
