Bombers linebacker Bass sitting 4th on CFL rookie list

Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea is hopeful his centre will be able to take the field on Saturday.

Dominic Picard missed practice on Wednesday with what O’Shea categorized as an upper-body ailment. Picard was visiting the doctor’s office while Blue Bombers’ 2014 first-rounder Matthias Goossen took snaps at the position.

O’Shea said he’s hopeful Picard will be in the lineup when the Calgary Stampeders come to Investors Group Field on the weekend, but he’ll know more in a couple of days.

Picard practiced Sunday and Monday. The Bombers took Tuesday off from the practice field.

Meanwhile, the CFL’s latest rookie rankings had Blue Bombers linebacker Khalil Bass sitting pretty in the fourth spot for August.

After taking the rejection road multiple times on his way to the Bombers starting lineup, Bass has fans of the team starting to forget about the likes of Henoc Muamba and Ian Wild.

Bass is fourth in the league in defensive tackles with 44, right up there with the big names of the CFL – Adam Bighill, Solomon Elimimian and Jeff Knox Jr. – and has three sacks and two fumble recoveries to boot.

“He’s been waiting quite some time to get his opportunity and he’s making the most of it right now,” O’Shea said. “It’s pretty important for him.”
