The hits keep on coming for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The club announced Wednesday that strong-side linebacker Chris Randle is out for the season with a knee injury sustained in a 37-19 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last Sunday.

Randle is a team leader on and off the field and his loss is yet another blow for a Bombers team mired in a four-game losing streak and already plagued with injuries, including a leg injury to starting QB Drew Willy that is expected to keep Willy on the sidelines for at least three more games — and likely more judging by the slow and very ginger limp Willy’s been doing around Investors Group Field this week.

“(Randle) is obviously a key cog in not only our defence, but also our special teams,” Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea said Wednesday after practice at IGF. “He’s a great guy to have around that’s for sure — he’s a leader in the meeting rooms.

“But I don’t think that’s going to stop him from being a leader. And on the field, it’s just a matter of guys recognizing not only that they have an opportunity, but they have a duty to play well for Chris Randle too.”

Randle finishes the season with 37 defensive tackles, 7 special teams tackles, one interception and one sack.

With Randle out of the lineup, O’Shea says he expects safety Maurice Leggett to start at strong-side linebacker this Saturday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the annual Banjo Bowl. Lin-J Shell, in turn, is expected to replace Leggett at safety.

Meanwhile, starting left guard Chris Greaves sat out practice for the second day in a row on Wednesday with a lower-body injury, but O’Shea said the veteran offensive lineman is expected to practice on Thursday and could still start this Saturday.
