The Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to wheel and deal as the club tries to arrest a four-game losing streak.
The team announced Wednesday afternoon that they have traded veteran non-import offensive lineman Chris Greaves to the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for import offensive lineman Selvish Capers and a second round draft pick in 2016.
Capers spent the past two seasons in Edmonton and started nine games in 2014, seven at tackle and two at guard.
The deal comes just a week after the Bombers acquired QB Matt Nichols from the Eskimos in a deal that saw the Bombers send the Eskimos a conditional seventh round draft pick in 2017.
Edmonton has two second round picks in 2016 — their own and the one belonging to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Bombers acquired the Riders pick in the Greaves deal — a pick that would be ninth overall in next year’s draft if the 1-9 Riders finish last this season.
Greaves was in his sixth season with the Bombers and had been the club’s longest serving player, but he’d fallen out of favour. There were reports the club had tried to move him last winter and Greaves was also a healthy scratch for a game earlier this season.
Greaves didn’t practice on Tuesday or Wednesday. Just hours before the trade was announced, Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea said Greaves had a lower body injury but was expected to be at practice on Thursday and could still start for the Bombers in Saturday’s Banjo Bowl.
Import OL Sam Longo has been practicing in place of Greaves at left guard this week. The club also announced on Wednesday that they have signed another import offensive lineman in Cam Jefferson (6-6, 305, UNLV-Arkansas) and released OL Devin Tyler and DT Kashawn Fraser.
The Bombers have been starting an extra non-import for most of the 2015 season and can afford to lose Greaves’ non-import status on the offensive line.
