PENTICTON, B.C. — Mike Zalewski and Reid Gardiner broke a 1-1 tie with goals 2:03 minutes apart early in the third period as the Vancouver Canucks stopped the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 at Sunday afternoon’s Canucks Young Stars Classic tournament at the South Oakanagan Events Centre.

The Canucks were full value for their first victory of the tournament, outskating and outhustling the Jets from start to finish. The final shots tally, 44-18 in Vancouver’s favour, told the tale.

The Jets have lost both starts so far at the tournament, and have not looked all that good. They play the Edmonton Oilers in their final tournament appearance on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Central time.

Vancouver’s Jared McCann had opened the scoring with a two-on-one snapshot at 14:26 of the second.

That goal was followed by Josh Morrissey’s five-on-three power-play goal that may have glanced off a skate in front of the goal at 17:48.

Hunter Shinkaruk scored an easy empty-net goal for Vancouver late in the game.
