Trudeau to be in Winnipeg Saturday for event in Tory stronghold

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will make a third and final appearance in Winnipeg Saturday, likely becoming the only leader to visit the city three times in the 11-week election campaign.

Trudeau will speak at a rally at the St. James Civic Centre at 6:30 p.m.

His appearance there comes about 36 hours before the polls open on election day on Oct. 19.

The Liberals are energized by polls showing significant improvement in support in Winnipeg, where they won only one seat in 2011, but could walk away with four or five next week.

Winnipeg North Liberal incumbent Kevin Lamoureux told the Free Press last week he was encouraging Trudeau to come to Winnipeg for a third time, and wanted him to go to Charleswood-St.James-Assiniboia-Headingley.

That riding is where veteran Conservative Steven Fletcher is running and is generally considered the safest Conservative seat in the city. However the Liberals are spinning they have strength in the area after the NDP dumped its original candidate over misguided social media comments. This visit there is likely the Liberals trying to signal to Winnipeg voters just how strong the party is in the city right now.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair have both been to Winnipeg twice and neither are currently scheduled to return.
