PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — The last Manitoban standing is out at the Canad Inns Prairie Classic, while the Brad Jacobs train rolls one step closer to the final.

While Jacobs easily handled his morning quarter-final match against Saskatchewan’s Jeff Hartung, winning 7-2, reigning Manitoba champion Reid Carruthers fell 5-2 to Saskatchewan’s Steve Laycock in their morning battle.

The big news of the bonspiel could be Alberta skip Charley Thomas, who dispatched Japanese champion Yusuke Morozumi 6-5 in the quarters.

Earlier in the Prairie Classic, Thomas had knocked down favoured Team Mike McEwen, and toppled Ontario veteran Glenn Howard and Toronto’s Mark Kean.

He’ll now face Laycock in the 2 p.m. semifinal.

The fourth berth in the semis goes to Alberta’s Kevin Koe, who eked out a 5-4 morning win over Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher.

That sets up a meeting of the titans between Koe and Jacobs at 2 p.m.

The province’s richest cash spiel wraps up tonight with the 6 p.m. final, which will be broadcast live on Shaw TV.
