The Winnipeg Rifles have named a new head coach, handing the reins to former St. Vital Mustangs and U of M Bisons player Geordie Wilson.

Wilson’s coaching resumé includes stints with the Charleswood Broncos, Sisler Spartans and Tec Voc Hornets. He has also been an offensive coordinator of the under-19 provincial team.

“We are extremely excited to have Geordie taking the reins of the team,” club president Todd Wilson (no relation) said in a statement. “Geordie has competed as a player or coach in top Manitoba programs at the high school, junior and university levels. Over the years, we have watched Geordie motivate his players to work hard to win championships, graduate and move on to become outstanding members of their respective communities. This matches well with our mission for Rifles players.”

Geordie said he was looking forward to the challenge of taking over the Rifles.

“My family may have careers to pay the bills but our family business has always been football,” he said. “I look forward to doing my part to help bring a national junior championship to the City of Winnipeg and the Rifle organization.”

Wilson also announced his offensive and defensive coordinators for the 2016 season. Jeff Ready returns as offensive co-ordinator while Craig Bachynski be the team’s defensive co-ordinator. Bachynski coached the St. Vital Mustangs to a provincial midget title last weekend.
