The Winnipeg Jets head back out on the road this week having won two out of their last three games at home but nursing a nasty five-game losing streak on the road.

While no one at MTS Centre on Tuesday was celebrating a just completed three-game homestand that saw the Jets win the first two legs before falling 4-1 Monday night to the Colorado Avalanche, the general consensus at the team’s optional skate was that a Jets team that was in a freefall when they limped home from the road just a week ago made some important corrections to their game while they were back in Winnipeg.

The question now is whether they can build on that in what is a challenging upcoming road trip — three games in four nights — that begins on Wednesday in Washington against the Capitals and their red-hot Russian sniper, Alex Ovechkin.

“There’s lots of confidence in their group offensively but they defend very well too and they get some outstanding goaltending,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said of the Capitals this morning.

“What they’ve done well (in Washington) is taken a group that has a very high skill level and got them to buy in and grind a little bit with that.”

The Capitals have the third best record in the Eastern Conference at 14-5-1 and have won two in a row.

The Jets are 5-6-1 on the road this season and the challenges won’t end in Washington for them on this upcoming road trip. After playing the Capitals, the Jets travel to St. Paul to face a Wild team on Friday that just beat them convincingly in St. Paul on Nov. 10 in a game in which the Jets gave up four goals in the second period.

The Jets then wrap up the trip on Saturday in Denver against the same Avalanche team that stymied them at MTS Centre Monday night. On the plus side, the Jets might be better off facing the Avalanche in Denver — Colorado is just 2-5-1 at home this season, the worst home record in the NHL.
