As the Travis Hamonic situation continues to linger for the New York Islanders, others like the Winnipeg Jets are unable to ignore the fallout.

The report about the Islanders defenceman surfaced in November, courtsey of Sportsnet’s Eliotte Friedman, stating that Hamonic had asked for a trade last summer, preferring to be closer to his Manitoba home.

No deal has been made but tongues have been wagging.

“That’s all external stuff,” Jets right-winger and leading scorer Blake Wheeler said today. “It doesn’t enter the locker room too much.

“Guys aren’t stupid. I think people know that those things are possible and are part of the business but it’s not something we turn the music off before practice and talk about too much.”

Jets coach Paul Maurice said today he’s got little control over a situation that has developed elsewhwere.

“I don’t think it does (enter) in our room,” Maurice said after today’s practice at the MTS Centre. “You’re talking about a real unusual circumstance. It’s created from another place, a player, Travis Hamonic wants out.

“We’re a western team, it’s his home town so we’re the first place that — and I understand the media, what else do you have to do but figure out how this would work, so we’re going to take a list of guys that would make it work and decide all who should or could be traded.

“I don’t think it gets it your room. I do think at times it can affect the families of those players more than the players themselves. And it’s far, far easier to deal with that than the other situation where you’ve got a guy in your room that’s made it known he’d rather play somewhwere else.”

“I think this one’s minor.”

The Jets spent their morning preparing to kick off their December schedule with a home game Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The start time is 6:30 p.m. due to national TV.

Winnipeg is 11-12-2, having finished its month of November at 4-9-1. That performance saw the team plummet to near the bottom of the NHL in defence. The Jets are No. 29 today out of 30 teams in goals against average, 3.15.

“The results may not say (we’re pretty close) but if you look deep down into it, coming from where we were, 7-0 in Nashville, since then I think we’ve been pretty good,” Wheeler said. “We’ve had some bad bounces go against us and it’s just all a part of grinding it out.

“As a whole, we’ve played pretty well but there have just been some lapses that have hurt us. Those are the things we need to shore up on.”
