University of Manitoba Bisons football star David Onyemata is already projected to be plucked at the top of the upcoming CFL draft.
Now, the defensive lineman could be set to get some extra interest from down south.
On Monday, the Bisons announced that Onyemata has been selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game, an annual showcase of top U.S. and Canadian football prospects.
The invite means that Onyemata, who will join Team West, will play and train in front of a bevy of NFL scouts.
It’s a rare honour. The East-West Shrine Game rosters are primarily filled with American college athletes, and Onyemata is just the fourth Bisons player to be chosen since CIS players were added in 1985.
The last Bison to be named for the game was DL Evan Gill in 2014; prior to that, DT Izzy Idonije in 2003 and DE Jason Rauhaus in 1992 were selected for the game.
Onyemata is coming off a standout campaign, that saw him blaze his way to the CIS’s J.P. Metras Award as Canadian university football’s outstanding down lineman.
