The Winnipeg Jets’ return to the MTS Centre for the first time in 2016 was spoiled by the Buffalo Sabres, who skated to a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon.

Sam Reinhart scored three goals for his first career hat trick and Marcus Foligno provided the game-winning marker as the Sabres improved to 16-22-4 on the season with the win and snapped a six-game losing streak in the process. Blake Wheeler and Mathieu Perreault added goals for the Jets.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 19-20-3, unable to make up valuable ground on the Nashville Predators — the team they’re chasing for the final playoff wild-card spot — who dropped their game to Arizona Saturday night.

It didn’t take long for Buffalo to make their presence felt, with Reinhart scoring just 1:37 into the game. He netted his 10th of the season with a shot that beat Connor Hellebuyck to the top-right corner.

The Jets drew even just minutes later with a goal from Wheeler. In what started with a beautiful between-the-legs pass from Drew Stafford that found its way to the stick of Bryan Little, ended with Little’s shot being redirected by Wheeler to make it a 1-1 game.

The Sabres would take the lead with another goal from Reinhart, who struck on the power play this time, beating Hellebuyck with a shot from the left side of the net that hit a stick in front and went through the netminder’s legs.

Perreault made it 2-2 early in the second, converting a power-play goal for the Jets that needed a video review to be deemed a good goal. The Sabres thought Andrew Ladd was offside on the goal, but review did little to change the minds of the refs, as the call on the ice stood.

The third period belonged to the Sabres, who retook the lead at the 4:12 mark with a goal from Foligno, his third of this season. Reinhart would eventually put the game away with an empty-net goal with 25 seconds left.

The game featured the return of Evander Kane, who was in Winnipeg for the first time since he was traded to Buffalo along with rearguard Zach Bogosian last February. It didn’t take long for fans to give him a “warm” welcoming, raining down boos as the winger took the ice for the pre-game warm-up. Those boos would turn to cheers moments later as Kane stepped on a puck at the blue-line, enough to stumble to the ice. More boos were heard every time the 24-year-old touched the puck, with a number of chants — “Kane, you suck,” among others — happening throughout the game.
