Dan Marino is coming to Winnipeg.
The Rady Jewish Community Centre announced Monday the NFL Hall of Famer will be the keynote speaker for the 44th Annual Rady JCC Sports Dinner on June 21 at the newly expanded RBC Convention Centre.
“Dan Marino has a powerful story to tell, not only one of incredible success in the NFL, but also one of raising a son with autism and making a huge difference in the special needs community,” said Gayle Waxman, Rady JCC Executive Director in a release. “He exemplifies the values of the Rady JCC and what this dinner aims to support, and is sure to be a draw for sports fans and beyond.”
Marino, who spent all of his 17 seasons in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, joins a long list of talented speakers with a strong football pedigree including Peyton Manning and Joe Montana. Marino has racked up a number of accolades over his career, earning the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award in just his second season and was voted to the Pro Bowl nine times.
But he’s also made a name for himself off the football field. After the birth of his second child, Michael, who was born with autism, Marino became a fierce advocate for children with autism. He founded The Dan Marino Foundation in 1992 and since then has raised more than $45 million to provide services and to develop unique initiatives including the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Center, the Marino Autism Research Institute, the DMF Jobs Development Program and the Marino College.
“As a sports fan, I’m thrilled Dan Marino is headlining our dinner this year,” added Blair Worb, the Sports Dinner Chair. “But knowing special needs advocacy is close to his heart, just as it is for the Rady JCC as an organization makes this extra special.”
Money collected from ticket sales, as well as from silent, live and rainbow auctions will be used to fund programming at the Rady JCC, including scholarships and subsidies for families and individuals in need. To buy tickets, visit radyjcc.com or call 204-477-7513.
