Despite a valiant effort late in the game, a poor start by the Winnipeg Jets was enough for the visiting Carolina Hurricanes to walk away with a 5-3 win at the MTS Centre Friday night.

Goals from Phillip Di Giuseppe, Andrej Nestrasil, and Jordan Staal put the visitors up 3-0 before the five-minute mark of the first period. It would also mark the end of Connor Hellebuyck’s night as he was pulled after allowing the three goals on just six shots. Michael Hutchinson stood tall in relief, but the Jets still found themselves in a 4-0 hole after 20 minutes thanks to a Justin Faulk goal.

Alexander Burmistrov scored the lone goal in the second period and Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien each scored in the third period to cut the deficit to 4-3. But it was too little, too late as the Jets were unable to find the equalizer late despite some intense pressure. Nestrasil added his second goal late in the game, beating Hutchinson with a back-hand move on a breakaway with under two minutes left on the clock.
