Gene J. Puskar / The Associated Press Winnipeg Jets' Dustin Byfuglien (33) collides with Pittsburgh Penguins' Evgeni Malkin (71) during the first period of an NHL hockey game in Pittsburgh, Saturday.

After a scoreless opening period, the Jets and Penguins combined for three goals in the second frame, with Pittsburgh holding a 2-1 edge after 40 minutes.

The Penguins opened the second period with two goals in the first 51 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. Kris Letang scored his 10th of the season with a one-timer blast to the top corner, followed by Carl Hagelin’s sixth of the season.

Winnipeg cut the lead in half with a power-play goal from Blake Wheeler, his 18th, midway through the period.

Goals from Scott Wilson and Hagelin would make it 4-1 by the mid-way mark of the third period, ending any real chance the Jets had at a comeback.

Michael Hutchinson went the distance, making 29 saves in the loss. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27 pucks in the win.
