The march to an out-of-the-playoffs finish resumes tonight for the Winnipeg Jets as they kick off a long run of home games.

The Jets meet the Florida Panthers tonight at the MTS Centre at 7 p.m.

The Panthers continue to lead the NHL’s Atlantic Division with 78 points and have added forwards Teddy Purcell and Jiri Hudler and defenceman Jakub Kindl for their certain run to the playoffs.

The Jets will have forward Marko Dano in their lineup for the first time at home after last Thursday’s trade that sent captain Andrew Ladd to Chicago. The Jets are also without defenceman Adam Pardy, who was claimed on waivers on Monday by the Edmonton Oilers.

Tonight’s game is the first of 13 home games remaining for the Jets, most in the NHL. Toronto and San Jose also have 13 home dates to play.

At 56 points, Winnipeg, however, is 12 points off the Western Conference’s playoff line today and has lost lost five of its last six (1-4-1).

“We have a lot of games and we want to get on a run and get comfortable playing in this building as quick as we can,” Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba said after this morning’s game-day skate. “We’ve had some stretches on the road so it’ll be nice to get home and get in front of our crowd in our building and find that energy in this room to bring out on the ice.

“Starts are a big thing, getting out there with the right mindset.”

Jets centre Mathieu Perreault didn’t skate with his team again this morning. He spent Monday with his wife, who gave birth to a daughter.

“He’s a father, which is wonderful, and it was a full day yesterday… so he came in this morning so we made him go home and get some sleep,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said this morning.

The coach said he’ll be continuing to keep an eye on Dano, 21, as he gets comfortable with his new team.

“I thought he played, for a first game (wth a new team)… a really smart game,” the coach said. “He didn’t try to do too much and was effective in the position we put him in and he’s got a practice in now and we’d like to see a little more comfort now. We’re just watching him.”

With Ondrej Pavelec in goal, tonight’s game starts a five-game homestand and the Jets play 10 of the next 13 at home.
