Voters are potentially on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in byelection costs if they elect provincial candidates already holding school board seats.

The candidates are only allowed to hold one office. So if elected, they would have to give up their school board seat and a byelection would be held to fill the vacancies.

St. Vital Conservative candidate Colleen Mayer is a trustee in Louis Riel School Division; St. James Conservative candidate Scott Johnston is a trustee in St. James-Assiniboia S.D.; and Brandon West NDP candidate Linda Ross is a Brandon S.D. school trustee.

The Liberals have two candidates who were municipal councillors, who gave up their seats: Flin Flon candidate Leslie Beck and Morris candidate John Falk.

Winnipeg’s election office said last year a stand-alone school board byelection, in which no other office such as council or the mayoralty is being contested, runs $4 to $6 a voter.

Given how many registered voters live in school board wards in urban areas, a byelection could exceed $100,000 if the candidates are successful.
