The Winnipeg Jets kicked off their final homestand of the 2015-16 season falling 2-1 to the Ottawa Senators at the MTS Centre Wednesday night.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 31-39-7 on the year, while the win improves the Senators to 35-33-9 and snaps a three-game losing streak.

The Jets return to the MTS Centre Friday to take on the Chicago Blackhawks before their final regular season game at home against the Minnesota Wild Sunday.

PHIL HOSSACK / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Ottawa Senator #93 Mika Zibanejad steps on the puck in front of Winnipeg Jet Dustin Byfuflien and netminder #34 Michael Hutchinson during the first period at the MTS Center Wednesday.

Zack Smith scored three minutes 16 seconds into the opening frame, converting a nice pass from Mark Stone before beating Michael Hutchinson for his 22nd of the year.

After a scoreless second period, the Jets would eventually answer back with a goal from Mark Scheifele. Blake Wheeler entered the Senators’ zone, delaying enough to find an unmarked Scheifele, who recorded his 26th of the season.

Ottawa regained their lead just minutes later after Alex Chaisson went top shelf on Hutchinson for his eighth of his campaign, a play that began with a pass from Ryan Dzingel.

Michael Hutchinson started in net for the Jets, finishing the game with 17 shots to fall to 8-15-3 on the season. Andrew Hammond improved to 6-9-4 with a 20-save performance.

Ottawa now has a six-game winning streak in Winnipeg. The Sens last lost to the Jets/Thrashers franchise on the road when Andrew Ladd scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout in a 5-4 Thrashers’ win over Ottawa at Atlanta’s Philips Arena in March of 2011.
