Winnipeg’s Chantal Van Landeghem will race for gold on Saturday night, but it won’t be in the women’s 50-metre freestyle at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Van Landeghem finished fifth in her semifinal heat and 10th overall, narrowly missing out on a place in Saturday’s final.

The 22-year-old will race for gold on Saturday night in the women’s 4×100-metre medley relay at 9:04 p.m. CST.

Van Landeghem finished tied for third in her heat and finished eighth overall in Friday morning’s preliminary races with a time of 24.57 seconds. She will race for a spot in Saturday’s final at 8:59 p.m. tonight.

Van Landeghem owns the Canadian record in the 50-metre free with a time of 24.39 seconds, which she set last year at the world championships in Kazan, Russia.

The Vincent Massey Collegiate graduate won a bronze medal last Saturday in the women’s 4×100-metre freestyle relay.

She narrowly missed out on the women’s 100-metre freestyle final, finishing in 11th spot Wednesday night.

Canada has won five medals in the pool in Brazil, including its first gold medal from 16-year-old Penny Oleksiak on Thursday night.
