Winnipeg’s Chantal Van Landeghem and Canada finished fifth in the women’s 4×100 medley relay Saturday night at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Van Landeghem anchored the final 100 metres and had it all to do after Canada fell behind in the breaststroke. Four-time medalist Penny Oleksiak kept Canada in contention after strong swim as Canada’s third, but Van Landeghem was unable to make up the half second they needed to be on the podium.

It wasn’t the final night Canada would have hoped for in the pool, with history on the line for 16-year-old Oleksiak, who was looking to match Winnipeg’s Cindy Klassen for most medals for a Canadian at a Games with five.

Van Landeghem missed the finals of the women’s 100-metre freestyle and 50-metre freestyle after winning bronze a week ago in the women’s 4×100-metre freestyle.

Canada finishes with six medals in the pool in Brazil, including its first gold medal from Oleksiak on Thursday night.
