BRANDON — The Brandon Wheat Kings unveiled a new coaching staff on Thursday in a major restructuring of the Western Hockey League team’s hockey operations.
David Anning is the next head coach of the Wheaties, with former NHL defenceman Aaron Rome and longtime Manitoba Junior Hockey League coach Don MacGillivray serving as assistants.
Former Brandon goalie Tyler Plante has been named the team’s goaltending coach, replacing Matt Cockell.
The head coaching job became open when owner Kelly McCrimmon left to join the NHL’s expansion franchise in Las Vegas.
Anning, 30, has been with the club for four years, serving as interim head coach when McCrimmon left for more than a month in December to join Team Canada at the world junior championship.
“It’s given me an opportunity to watch him work, watch him develop,” McCrimmon said. “It was a great opportunity when I was away for a month at Christmastime for him to run the team… I think that was a real good test for him and yet for me, I’ve felt for some time that David would be the next coach for our team.”
McCrimmon said an announcement is coming soon on who will assume the duties of general manager.
Meanwhile, Darren Ritchie will leave his role as an assistant coach to become the team’s new director of scouting, replacing Wade Klippenstein, who also left to take an NHL job.
It won’t be long before the staff has players on the ice. Rookie camp begins on Tuesday, Aug. 30, with main camp starting on Friday, Sept. 2.
Among the players on hand will be 17-year-old Czech defenceman Daniel Bukac, who the team selected in the second round of the 2016 Canadian Hockey League import draft. Swedish defenceman Linus Nassen, who the Wheat Kings drafted in the first round, won’t report.
The Wheat Kings also announced they have sold 2,017 season tickets and are on pace to meet their goal of 2,500.
