Brown to be added to Bombers’ Ring of Honour

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have inducted CFL Hall of Fame defensive lineman Doug Brown into the Ring of Honour, the team announced early Tuesday morning.

Brown, who will be the ninth and final player this season to have his name and number added to the upper deck at Investors Group Field, played his entire 11-year CFL career in Winnipeg.

He was named a division all-star eight times and a CFL all-star in seven seasons. In 2001, his rookie year, Brown won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian award.

“I was lucky enough to be affiliated with one football club for all 11 years of my CFL career,” said Brown in a statement. “The Bombers are 86 years old and so to be recognized by a club that has such a storied history with so many players that defined the Canadian football landscape is very humbling and a tremendous honour.”

Brown was inducted into the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Hall of Fame in 2012, the year after his retirement. Earlier this year, he was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

“Knowing Doug personally as a teammate and friend, I am pleased to be able to add his name to the Ring of Honour,” said Bombers President and CEO Wade Miller. “Doug remains a familiar face at the stadium on game days and we are thrilled to add such a tremendous player to the list of inductees.”

A formal introduction into the Ring of Honour will take place during halftime of the Bombers’ final home game Oct. 29 against the Ottawa Redblacks.

Brown’s addition puts an end to the Bombers honouring someone at each home game. Starting next season, only one inductee will be added each year.
