Jets fall 3-2 to Dallas Stars

DALLAS — Dallas centre Tyler Seguin fired a shot from a sharp angle past Winnipeg Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson in the third period and it proved to be the winning goal in a 3-2 NHL victory for the Stars on Tuesday night.

Seguin’s third goal of the season came at 7:27 as the hosts grabbed a 3-1 lead.

Winnipeg centre Mark Scheifele scored his fourth goal of the year with nine seconds left in regulation time and the Jets’ net empty to make it a one-goal game.

Dallas improved to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Jets are 2-4-0. Winnipeg has lost its only two road games of the season.

Hutchinson stopped 23 shots for the visitors, while Stars goalie Antti Niemi made 28 saves in a winning effort.

Jets winger Drew Stafford was injured in the first period and did not return.

Winnipeg hosts the Stars on Thursday night at MTS Centre. The rematch begins at 7 p.m.

Second period

The Jets trailed the Stars 2-1 after 40 minutes at American Airlines Center.

Winnipeg forward Joel Armia’s wraparound effort found the back of the net behind Niemi with just 5 seconds left in the middle frame to cut the Dallas lead in half.

Armia had a couple of terrific chances in the period but finally scored his first of the year, stealing the puck from Niemi and then stuffing the puck in, to cut the lead in half.

Patrick Eaves scored his first goal of the season for the hosts at 5:02 of the second period on the power-play, ripping a shot into an open net with Hutchinson sprawled out in his crease, to Dallas a 2-0 lead.

Jets head coach Paul Maurice challenged the play, claiming goalie interference, but was unsuccessful.

Dallas rookie centre Devin Shore had a pair of assists.

First period

Brett Ritchie had the lone goal of the opening period, snapping a shot past Hutchinson at 14:37.

Winnipeg’s best early chance of the period came four minutes in when Armia’s nifty pass found Shawn Matthias open for a Grade A scoring chance. Matthias’ backhand was stopped by Niemi but Matthias gobbled up the rebound and lifted the puck over an open net.

Matthias had another excellent chance to score with five minutes left in the initial period but he was stoned again by Niemi. Less than a minute later, Ritchie opened the scoring.

The Armia-Matthias-Adam Lowry line was the Jets’ most productive trio of the night.
