TAMPA BAY — The Winnipeg Jets narrowly escaped heartache Tuesday night, beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-4 at Amalie Arena.

The Jets, who improved to 18-19-3 with the win, held a 4-1 edge after two periods, but that lead disappeared in the third, with the Bolts making it a one-goal game, 5-4, with 2:31 left in the frame.

Under pressure from a heavy Lightning attack, the Jets would finally get some breathing room thanks to an empty-net goal by Patrik Laine, who scored his 20th of the season to make it a 6-4 final.

With the loss, the Lighting fell to 19-16-4 on the year.

The Jets goal a pair of goals from Nikolaj Ehlers, one of which came on a penalty shot, while Mark Scheifele, Jacob Trouba and Dustin Byfuglien each got singles to round out the scoring for Winnipeg. Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves for the win — his 14th of the season.

Nikita Kucherov sparked the comeback in the second period for the home side, while Matthew Peca and Ondrej Palat also scored for the Lightning.

The win comes in the first game of three-game road trip for the Jets this week and snaps a two-game losing streak following home losses to the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders. The Jets will now travel to Sunrise to take on the Florida Panthers Wednesday night, before wrapping up with a matinee game Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres.
