Wicked weather has forced the NHL to postpone Tuesday night’s game in New Jersey between the Devils and Winnipeg Jets.

A fierce storm in the New Jersey area has dumped snow and freezing rain, while battering the region with strong winds.

The Jets-Devils game has been rescheduled to March 28 at the Prudential Center. Both teams were originally scheduled to be idle March 27-29 and the rescheduled game falls between Jets home dates on March 26 against the Vancouver Canucks and March 30 against the Anaheim Ducks.

It’s the first time in the short history of Winnipeg Jets 2.0 that the team has had a regular-season game cancelled.

The Jets flew into Newark early Tuesday morning immediately following the club’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Predators in Nashville Monday night.

Club spokesman Scott Brown confirmed Tuesday morning that the team arrived safe and sound in advance of the worst of the blizzard.

The Jets are scheduled to play in Brooklyn Thursday night against the New York Islanders and that game is expected to take place as planned.

While forecasts called for the New York boroughs to receive as much as 50 centimetres of snow Tuesday, that’s been revised down to between 10 and 15 centimetres, with the rest falling in the form of rain and sleet.

But while there’s been less snow than expected, there’s a phenomenal amount of water suddenly on the ground, and that’s led to fears of flooding in New Jersey.

The Jets were originally scheduled to have a day off in New York on Wednesday, but have now scheduled a practice in New Jersey at noon.

The Jets (30-33-7) are 10 points back of the St. Louis Blues for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Blues have two games in hand.
