Canada loses in spectacular fashion

Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg and his teammate Joanne Courtney of Edmonton lost the gold-medal game of the world mixed doubles curling championship in stunning fashion Saturday.

Ahead 5-2 in the final end, Courtney was wide with her final shot and gave Team Switzerland a draw for four and a 6-5 victory over the Canadian duo.

The Swiss tandem of Martin Rios and Jenny Perrier won gold in Lethbridge, Alta., while the Canadians settled for silver.

Courtney was wide on an attempted raise of her own rock, and it resulted in leaving three red Swiss counters.

Perrier then drew to the four-foot for the decisive point.

Carruthers and Courtney accomplished their first mission Friday, defeating a pair from Latvia in a quarter-final match to move into the semis and clinch an Olympic berth for Canada.

Mixed doubles debuts as a medal sport at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and Canada will be one of eight teams competing for medals.

On Saturday morning, the Canadian team beat China 5-4 to advance to the afternoon’s championship battle with Switzerland.

Carruthers is a former world men’s champion, winning in 2011 as a second with Jeff Stoughton.

Courtney came up just short of winning a second world crown in a month. She tosses second stones for Rachel Homan’s women’s foursome from Ottawa, which prevailed in Beijing in late March.
