Mayor Brian Bowman not only supports Winnipeg Transit giving free rides to military veterans and serving members on Remembrance Day — he’d like it to be in place on Saturday.
Bowman, during a press conference Wednesday, told reporters he agrees with the idea first brought up by Winnipeg Free Press columnist Gordon Sinclair Tuesday, but he doesn’t know if it will be in place by this Nov. 11.
“I fully support free transit on Remembrance Day for members of the military and veterans,” Bowman said. “I would support that going forward and (in) future years.
“I’ve asked them to explore the feasibility for this weekend… we’ll see what they can accommodate in a very tight time frame.”
Transit services in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Halifax, Calgary and Edmonton offer free rides for veterans.
Bowman said the main question for Winnipeg Transit to answer is how it will be administered.
“It’s a good idea that has been raised,” he said.
