Two more charged in 2018 killing of Winnipeg man

Two people were charged this week with murder, bringing to five the number accused of killing a 40-year-old Winnipeg man last year.

Michael Anthony Caribou, 28, was arrested Monday, and 40-year-old Faron Alexander Spence of Winnipeg was arrested Thursday, city police said Friday. Both have been charged with second-degree murder.

Jason Peter John James was found dead inside a home on the 300 block of Pritchard Avenue on Sept. 22. Police had been called to check on his well-being. Police said James had been violently assaulted.

At the time, police would not say if anybody had been detained. A few days later, they put out a request for the public’s help in finding Caribou and Spence.

However, on Friday, police said they had initially charged two men and a woman who were in the home when they first responded to the call.

Diamond Sky Caribou, then 24, Gabriel Todd Mecas, then 32, and Sarah Louella Osborne, 22, were charged with second-degree murder. All three are from Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jay Murray said police were mum about the initial arrests when the slaying was first announced at a September news conference because “there was likely an investigative reason why (they) did not disclose their arrest at the time.”
